What are the hardest classes in college you’ve done? Trying to decide my schedule

Hey everyone! So I’m a freshman trying to figure out my schedule for next semester, and I’m kinda stressing. I keep hearing horror stories about certain classes, and I don’t wanna walk straight into academic doom 😅. What are the hardest classes in college, in your opinion? Like, the ones that totally wrecked your GPA or had you questioning your life choices halfway through the semester? I’m trying to avoid anything too brutal if I can help it, so drop your warnings (or survival tips) below – help a confused freshman out! 🙏

Organic Chemistry was a straight-up nightmare for me 😵‍💫. If someone asked me what are the hardest classes in college, this would 100% be at the top of my list. It’s not just about memorizing reactions – you actually have to understand how everything works at the molecular level, and it gets confusing fast. I was always behind, living on YouTube tutorials and office hours just to keep up. Honestly, unless it’s absolutely required for your major, think twice – and definitely try to get a solid professor if you have to take it!

Oof, yeah I’ve heard horror stories about Orgo. Thanks for the heads-up, I’ll def do some prof research before registering. 🙏

The difficulty depends on your strengths and interests.

Most Common Difficult Subjects in College
  • Engineering – Heavy math, problem-solving, and tough projects.
  • Math – Abstract thinking and logic.
  • Physics – Complex math and science concepts.
  • Organic Chemistry – Memorization and reaction mechanisms.
  • Law – Critical reading and legal analysis.

Stats absolutely wrecked me 😩. I thought it’d be chill with just some charts and averages, but it turned into one of the hardest college classes I’ve ever taken. The formulas, probability, and weird word problems totally threw me off. What helped me the most was finding a study group and using practice exams from past years. Also, Khan Academy videos? Lifesaver. Don’t go in unprepared like I did 😂

Hey! Totally feel you on this. For me, Organic Chemistry was the ultimate boss battle—I was crying over carbon chains at 2 AM 😩. And Advanced Calculus nearly had me switching majors.

That said, don’t let tough classes scare you off completely. Some of the hardest ones ended up teaching me the most—about the subject and about myself. I started seeing failure as a springboard toward my goals, whether that meant creating solid blog content, exploring high-paying jobs with a degree, or even working on becoming an effective leader in group projects.

Tip: Check Rate My Professors, talk to upperclassmen, and try to balance your load with a mix of challenging and manageable classes. You've got this 💪

Engineering Calculus II. Not even kidding – I still have nightmares 😬. It was easily one of the hardest college classes in the US, hands down. The theory is intense, and even one tiny mistake can mess up the entire problem. What helped me survive was doing tons of practice problems and going to office hours like it was my part-time job.

Hey y'all! One class that caught me off guard was philosophy, especially stuff like “what is real” or “how do we know things.” It sounds chill, but it can get really confusing fast. You’ll do a lot of reading and deep thinking, and the ideas can mess with your head a bit. If you like thinking about big questions, it’s cool. If not, maybe save it for later when your schedule’s lighter. Good luck picking classes!
