I need to know - can ChatGPT be detected as plagiarism??

Hey guys! I’m working on my thesis now, and I’m tempted to use ChatGPT for research and editing. But it got me wondering - can ChatGPT be detected as plagiarism?? Cause that would mean that my entire paper can be flagged and I’ll get a low grade, or maybe even get in trouble for it. What is y’all’s experience with it?? Plz help! 🙏

I had the same question when I was writing my essay! From what I’ve read, ChatGPT itself isn’t plagiarism, but if you copy-paste straight from it, that’s where things get sketchy. Some profs use AI detectors, and while those aren’t always accurate, they can still flag your work if it looks super AI-generated. So when I wondered can ChatGPT be detected as plagiarism, I decided not to risk it - no way I’m letting it write whole paragraphs for me 😅. What I do is use it for brainstorming and editing, but I rewrite everything in my own words.

💯 This!! My professor straight-up told us AI tools are fine for editing, but the moment you rely on them for full writing, it messes with your voice. You don’t wanna risk your work sounding robotic.

Tbh, it depends on your school. Some universities are super strict about AI, and others are chill if you use it responsibly. I’d check with your professor or school policy to be safe. I actually used ChatGPT to summarize research articles, and it saved me hours! But I made sure to double-check everything because it sometimes makes up sources (which is wild??). So yeah, it’s useful, but you gotta fact-check everything!

I don’t mess with chat anymore ‘cause when I tried using it for my nutrition paper, I spent more time fixing its nonsense than if I’d just written it myself. The facts were all over the place, straight-up dumb, and honestly, it was so bad I just canceled my subscription. 💀🚮

You don't use chat at all??? lol

Oh my god, YES. I once asked ChatGPT for a citation, and it literally gave me a fake author and journal 💀. Imagine submitting that without checking.

Yeah, generated text can contain plagiarism. It may sound silly, but adding the phrase "Avoid plagiarism, make the text 100% unique" when creating your prompt actually works pretty well.

If you're just using ChatGPT for editing, I think you're good. These tools aren’t perfect tho. What I do is mix up my sentence structure a lot and make sure my writing sounds like me. Also, I heard paraphrasing helps lower AI detection scores, so maybe try that if you’re worried?

Hey! I’ve used ChatGPT for my thesis too and totally get the worry. It’s not straight-up plagiarism, but if you copy-paste big chunks without changing anything, it could still get flagged depending on your school’s rules. I mostly use it to help brainstorm or fix up clunky sentences—like, I once asked it to clean up my intro and then rewrote it in my own words. Just don’t rely on it to write everything, and you’ll be fine.
